This is a healthy and delicious breakfast solution for anyone who wants to make a huge batch in advance, dole out the amount you want in the morning and simply add whatever toppings you happen to have on hand. The ingredients are inexpensive and easy to find — the perfect alternative to the store-bought cereals with cartoon figures on the box!

The grains in this cereal are a healthy mix of quinoa and millet, both gluten-free:

Quinoa is a good source of iron, calcium, magnesium, and a complete protein.

Millet is considered to be one of the least allergenic and most digestible grains available, plus it’s loaded with B-vitamins, phosphorous and potassium.

Both are warming grains so will help to heat the body during the cold winter months.

Once cooked, store your cooled grain mix in an airtight container in the fridge for five days. I make my mix on lazy Sunday nights, so I have breakfast for the entire work week. It takes about 3-4 minutes to assemble in the morning, and I’m good to go. You can even keep your re-heated grain mix in a thermos to enjoy at work and add your toppings there.

Here are the simple ingredients you’ll need for approximately 5 days of Healthy Breakfast Cereal:

1 cup quinoa
1 cup millet
4 ½ cups water
pinch of sea salt

Cook this up in 3 easy steps to store in the fridge until you’re ready to eat:

1. Rinse grains very well. Place in saucepan. Add water and salt.

2. Bring to a boil, reduce to simmer until water is absorbed, about 20 minutes.

3. Let cool slightly. Store in a container in the fridge.

For each breakfast portion in the morning, follow the instructions on the next page…

No cooking required! Easy to make with less than a minute of microwaving followed by 30 minutes or more of cooling down in the fridge. That means you can make these early in the morning for enjoyable protein snacking after breakfast or later in the day.

Each one of these delicious snack bars is loaded with 6 grams of protein, along with chocolate and peanut butter — a lot healthier and more nutritious than the store-bought alternatives. A couple of tips to start with: if you don’t want to bother with the food processor, get some oat flour at the grocery store (or order online: Whole Grain Oat Flour from The Prepared Pantry). And vegans can substitute maple syrup for honey, and replace the whey protein powder with a plant-based variety.

Here are the ingredients you’ll need to make a dozen of these protein snack bars:

1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats: put in a food processor and pulse until oats are a flour consistency

1/2 cup quick oats

3 scoops chocolate whey protein powder

1/2 cup organic brown rice crisps cereal: mix with the oat flour, quick oats, protein powder and cereal

1/4 cup honey

1/3 cup peanut butter: melt with the honey and vanilla extract, then pour over the oats and stir

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1-2 tablespoon non-dairy chocolate chips: melt in the microwave

Press the oat mixture into a greased loaf pan, then drizzle the melted chocolate over the top. Now let this cool in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before slicing it up into convenient, yummy snack bars.

The manufacturers of popular breakfast cereals have big marketing budgets to convince you that their products are nutritious and good for you. The truth is that most breakfast cereals are far from being truly nutritious, especially the brands designed to appeal to kids.

Some cereals sold by health food stores may be good for you if they avoid the two ingredients typically found in the commercially-prepared cereals from the supermarket.

The first “bad” ingredient is Added Sugar:

According to Jennifer L. Harris, lead researcher at Yale University’s Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity, children get a teaspoon of sugar with every 3 teaspoons of the typical cereal marketed to them.

Many adult cereals contain just as much sugar per cup, giving you up to 100 extra calories in your breakfast. The most common sweetener in cereals is high-fructose corn syrup, which, according to Princeton University professor Bart Hoebel, is more likely to cause obesity than table sugar. To reduce your sugar intake, opt for cereals with less than 10 percent of their calories coming from sugar, preferably without HFCS.

A second “bad” ingredient is Excessive Carbohydrates:

All cereal contains carbohydrates, but processing reduces the nutritional quality of a cereal’s carbohydrate content. Whole-grain cereals, including steel-cut oats, whole-wheat, quinoa or whole-oat cereals, provide fiber, along with some starch and a small amount of sugar.

In highly processed cereals, the hull and germ are removed from grains, which are then combined with additives and preservatives. These generally contain starch and sugar, but not much fiber.

The Harvard School of Public Health recommends only buying cereals that list a whole-grain ingredient first on their labels.

Some cereals sold by health food stores may be good for you if they avoid two ingredients typically found in the commercially-prepared cereals from the supermarket. Most Breakfast Cereals are far from being truly nutritious, especially the brands designed to appeal to kids.

Continue reading on the next page to learn about the other common unhealthy ingredient in popular breakfast cereals …

Make this once a week and you’ll have a healthy replacement for store-bought breakfast cereals. Ready to eat in the morning when time is of the essence.

This is a delicious breakfast solution for anyone who wants to make a huge batch in advance, dole out the amount you want in the morning and simply add whatever toppings you happen to have on hand.

Millet is considered to be one of the least allergenic and most digestible grains available, plus it’s loaded with B-vitamins, phosphorus and potassium.

Learn more about cooking with Millet: Eat More Millet!

Here are the simple ingredients you’ll need for approximately 5 days of Healthy Homemade Breakfast Cereal:

1 cup quinoa
1 cup millet
4 ½ cups water
pinch of sea salt

Cook this up in 3 easy steps to store in the fridge until you’re ready to eat:

1. Rinse grains very well. Place in saucepan. Add water and salt.

2. Bring to a boil, reduce to simmer until water is absorbed, about 20 minutes.

3. Let cool slightly. Store in a container in the fridge.

For each breakfast portion in the morning, follow the instructions on the next page…
