Listlessness, breathlessness and a general lack of energy can often be attributed to anemia and iron deficiency. Other occasional symptoms include dizziness, irritability, headaches, lack of concentration, craving for ice, rapid heartbeat, brittle fingernails and toenails, cracked lips, sore tongue, muscle pain and difficulties swallowing.

Iron deficiency is the most common nutrient deficiency in women. This is typically because women need greater amounts of iron than men:
Men need around 8 mg of iron in their daily diet, while women need up to 18 mg (27 mg if pregnant).

Low iron levels can also be caused by menstrual or internal bleeding (ulcers, hemorrhoids, colon cancer) or an absorption problem known as celiac disease.

It’s important to know the following:

Iron is a mineral that works with other substances to create hemoglobin, the compound that carries oxygen in the blood.

Iron absorption can be impaired by very high-fiber diets, alcohol, the tannic acid in tea and concentrated sources of calcium (for example, calcium supplements).

The best source of iron is red meat, with smaller amounts in chicken and fish. Iron is also present in plant foods such as legumes, nuts, whole grain breads and cereals, and green leafy vegetables, but it is not absorbed as well from these foods.

Eating foods rich in Vitamin C alongside iron-rich foods can improve iron absorption.

Learn more about the best sources of iron on the next page …

It’s really easy to make your own energy drink, and you’ll undoubtedly find that it tastes better than the store-bought alternatives. In addition, the homemade version is all-natural (… no artificial flavors, colorings and preservatives) and a lot cheaper!

Here are the ingredients to mix together:

3 cups unsweetened cranberry juice (100 percent juice)
5 cups water
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons maple syrup

Optional: 1 star anise. If using this optional ingredient, leave to infuse for one hour then strain.

After mixing all ingredients: refrigerate.

This all-natural homemade energy drink provides a great tasting mix of carbohydrates to fuel your muscles. It also contains electrolytes (sodium and potassium) to help replace what your body loses through sweat.

Coffee in the morning is how half of the adults in the U.S. wake up and get started every day. This habit isn’t all that bad since drinking coffee appears to lower the risk for diabetes, depression and some cancers.

Nevertheless, drinking coffee isn’t the only way to energize yourself for the day ahead. Here are 4 other ways to invigorate your sleepy mornings.

1. Chomp on an Apple

Taking a bite of this energizing fruit is a delicious way to jolt your body into gear. Apples contain natural sugars and other carbohydrates that can help stabilize your blood sugar. Other fruits, like bananas and oranges, will do the same. Pair a fruit with a protein, like a serving of Greek yogurt, for sustained satiety.

You’ve undoubtedly heard that you need to replenish your electrolytes, especially after a workout. But what are electrolytes, why do we need them and what’s the best way to maintain them in our body?

What are Electrolytes?

There are tons of electrolytes out there, but in our bodies they are basically calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium chloride, hydrogen phosphate (a mineral) and hydrogen carbonate (a salt).

Why do we need Electrolytes?

Electrolytes are vital for survival. Not only could we not function if we didn’t have them, if we dilute them too much, it can lead to death by “water poisoning.” They regulate our nerve and muscle function, our hydration, the pH of our blood, rebuilding damaged tissue, and determining blood pressure. One example of their job would be in order for a muscle to contract-from your heart to the tiniest toe muscle- it needs the electrolytes calcium, sodium, and potassium.
Too little and muscles become weak, too much and they over contract.

Go to the next page to learn WHEN we need to replenish Electrolytes in our body …

This is easy … just toss everything into a food blender and blend until the honey is dissolved. No blender? No worry … just squeeze and mix all the ingredients together by hand.

Then treat yourself to a tall glass of the results, add a few ice cubes, and enjoy.

If you’re lazy, however, and buy your Gatorade, PowerAde or electrolyte pumped-up sports drinks at the store to maintain your body’s balance of electrolytes during and after periods of heavy exercise, you may want to note the following:

When you look closer, you’re really just paying an outrageous price for glorified, brightly colored, sugar water. An overload of processed and refined sweetener (in the case of sports drinks, high-fructose corn syrup) is never a good thing. And while artificial flavors and colors don’t technically do much to your health, a part of me just shies away from the idea of ingesting things that are “fake.”

We’ve been led to believe by certain companies that we need an extra-special drink to recover from some sweat.

So what’s the bottom line about buying sports drinks and energy drinks?

Conclusion:

Make your own sports drink! It’s easy, quick, and naturally refreshing.

You will need…

-1/4 cup of freshly squeezed lime juice
-1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
-1½ to 2 cups fresh water, depending on how strong you want the flavor
-1/8 teaspoon of sea salt
-2 tablespoons natural sugar or honey, to taste

Enjoy!

It’s healthier (and cheaper!) to make your own energy bar snacks at home. Here’s a healthy recipe with dates, nuts, cocoa powder, coconut and vanilla that is really decadent and delicious. No cooking! You will be amazed with the end result.

Here is the recipe:

Chocolate-Cashew-Almond Energy Bar Recipe

Ingredients:

2 Cups (300g) Moist Medjool Dates, pitted and chopped
2 Cups (280g) Raw Cashew Nuts
½ Cup (60g) Raw Almond (without skin)
¾ Cup (75g) Cocoa Powder
A Pinch Of Sea Salt
½ Cup (40g) Unsweetened Shredded Coconuts
2 Tbsp Vanilla Extract
2 to 3 Tbsp Cold Water

Before making this, check to see how dry the dates are since you want them to be relatively moist. You may want to soak them overnight in water before tossing them in the food processor with all of the other ingredients. Make sure that the all of the pits are removed, too!

Equipment needed:

Food processor
Loaf pan: 11½ x 4½ inches (29 x 12 cm) , lined with aluminum foil

Preparation:

Combine chopped dates, cashews, almonds, cocoa powder, and sea salt in a food processor.

Pulse and process all the ingredients together until the texture is coarse.

Then add the shredded coconut, a quick pulse, and add the vanilla extract, a little water at a time until it reaches a dry but moist dough consistency.

Scrape the dough mixture into the lined pan, press evenly with a rubber spatula, and chill for about an hour before serving.

These delicious protein-packed snack bars are made with crystallized ginger, coconut, vanilla, and almonds to give them an abundance of flavor. These vegan treats are also easy to make (without a food processor) and healthy: no dairy, no egg, no soy and gluten free.

Good for breakfast and perfect for including in a packed lunch.

One variation is to substitute apple cinnamon protein cereal in the place of the corn flakes.

Here are the ingredients you’ll need for a 9×9 pan of Kristina’s GINGER VANILLA PROTEIN CRUNCH BARS:

2 tablespoons butter (soy free)
1/4 cup agave or maple syrup
1/4 cup coconut milk (carton)
2 scoops vanilla protein powder
Here is a popular fruit & vegetable smoothie recipe that works well for breakfast or as a post-workout snack. The peaches and pineapple add just enough sweetness to make this green smoothie really delicious.

Since it is quick and simple to make, it’s perfect for a quick breakfast or something healthy to drink later in the day.

Just throw all of these ingredients into the blender with 2 scoops of your favorite (vanilla) protein powder:

1 cup unsweetened almond milk
1 cup frozen peaches
1/2 cup frozen pineapple
1/2 banana
2 cups kale
1 tablespoon ground flaxseed
