Try this healthy protein-rich “overnight oats” recipe if you enjoy eating pumpkin pie and are looking for something delicious for breakfast.

Once you’ve gathered all of the ingredients, this is easy to make. Just mix everything together in an air-tight mason jar or plastic container, then place in the fridge to soak overnight. This softens the oats so they don’t need to be cooked or microwaved. You can keep this in the fridge for up to 4 days in an airtight container.

Any oats will work, including instant, steel-cut, and others. Then there are two more key ingredients in this recipe: Greek yogurt (with lots of protein) and pumpkin purée. Use healthy pumpkin purée, not canned pumpkin filling.

If your body is accustomed to healthy, organic food, then most regular sports drinks will likely be a shock to your system. It’s much better to make your own by combining organic coconut water with organic lemons and oranges for a sports drink with no added chemicals.

One danger typically hiding in normal sports drinks is a large amount of sugar that overwhelms the pancreas and inhibits the production of the insulin needed to transport blood sugar into the body where it is used to give you energy. When the pancreas is overworked from too much sugar, type-2 diabetes may occur.

Alternatively, when unhealthy sweeteners such as aspartame and sucralose are used in the place of sugar, this can lead to damaging your intestines and a variety of serious illnesses.

The solution is a healthy, homemade sports drink with naturally sweet coconut water, lemon juice, orange juice and optional stevia to sweeten even more.

Consuming too much processed sugar is a common cause of obesity, mood swings, and sicknesses such as diabetes. That means that it’s important to use a healthy replacement for the processed sugar in your food and beverage recipes. Stevia and a variety of stevia-based sweeteners are typically on the list of alternatives, but is Stevia the best choice? It’s good to know if and when Stevia should be used as a replacement for processed sugar in your recipes and with your meals. (Read on …)

Sugar substitutes and alternatives have shown themselves everywhere from the notorious Aspartame to Saccharin and Sucralose. But most of them are artificial and some are so dangerous they’ve been scientifically documented to induce cancerous tumors and other diseases.

So what is Stevia?

Stevia is essentially a cheap sugar alternative that comes directly from the soil and has been used as a sweetener for centuries by Latin American natives.

But is stevia good for you as they claim and you can safely put it in your homemade meal replacement shakes? Or is stevia bad for you like other popular alternative sweeteners and you should avoid it at all cost?

It’s wise to limit refined white sugar in your diet and replace it with a healthier alternative. There are lots of All-Natural Sugar Substitutes to choose from, but they are not always healthier and they do not offer the same sweetness when added to a recipe!

Regarding calories, it’s good to know as a reference point that one cup (200 grams) of refined white sugar contains 774 calories.

Here are some facts about popular alternative sweeteners to help you make a choice ….

Honey

Replace 3/4 cup for every one cup of sugar
773 calories, 209 grams sugar

How it’s made: Bees gather nectar from flowers, and spread it throughout the honeycombs in the hive where it evaporates and turns into a thick syrup, which is used to feed the colony.

Additional info: It offers 132 mg of potassium and may help reduce sore throats. Raw honey is rich in B vitamins and also vitamin C.

Baking tips: Decrease the liquid in your recipe by one-fifth, and lower the baking temp by 25 degrees to prevent browning.

Maple Syrup

Replace 3/4 cup for every one cup of sugar
600 calories, 159 grams sugar

How it’s made: Sap is collected from maple trees, boiled to evaporate the water, and the syrup is then filtered and bottled. It takes between 35 and 50 gallons of sap to make just one gallon of real maple syrup.

Additional info: A one-cup serving offers 180 mg of calcium, and also contains manganese, iron, and zinc, important minerals for a strong immune system; it also contains 322 mg of omega-6 fatty acids.

Baking tips: Always use real maple syrup — not maple flavored. Reduce the amount of liquid in recipes by three tablespoons for each cup of maple syrup used. Baked goods will have a brownish tint and also brown much faster so bake for less time or lower the temp of the oven by 25 degrees.

Here are the facts about another popular sugar substitute:

Stevia (Pyure Bakeable Blend)

Replace 1/2 cup for every one cup of sugar
0 calories, 0 grams sugar

How it’s made: Glycosides are the components of stevia leaves responsible for the plant’s sweetness. The leaves are placed in hot water, which is passed through a resin material to trap and collect the glycosides. The resin is then washed with alcohol to free the glycosides, and is then crystallized into the form you buy.

Additional info: Some research shows it can lower blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Since it’s calorie-free it’s helpful for weight management.

Baking tips: Reduce pan size and baking temp by 25 percent, add an additional egg white or slightly increase baking powder/soda, and add fruit puree or yogurt for moistness.

Processed sugar has been linked to problems with diabetes, heart disease and obesity — so it is no surprise that the World Health Organization and other authorities on the subject recommend that everyone should reduce their sugar intake by at least half: no more than 25 grams of sugar daily. This has led to a booming market for substitute sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose and stevia. Here is a description of these three popular sweeteners to help you decide which one is the best for you:

ASPARTAME

Found in: Canderel, Silver Spoon Sweetness & Light, Tesco granulated sweetener, Diet Coke Muller Light.

Two hundred times sweeter than sugar, aspartame is made from two amino acids (protein building blocks) joined together.

It’s widely used in zero-calorie diet drinks – often alongside another sweetener, acesulfame K, as the two taste better together.

Aspartame also comes as a powder or as tablets and you can drop 3,600 calories in a month or a pound in weight by using the tablets in place of two teaspoons of sugar in three cuppas a day.

Methanol is a breakdown product of aspartame that is toxic at high levels but the amount formed from a diet drink is less than a tenth of that formed from a fruit juice of the same size, according to the American Cancer Society.

Gabby is an “athletic blogger” from Richmond, Virginia, who makes her own electrolyte energy drinks. One of her easy-to-make and inexpensive favorites is this homemade drink that uses ginger water as its base. She has discovered that the tangy spice in this drink calms her stomach after a long, tough workout. In addition, the ginger helps to reduce muscle pain and soreness.

The recipe for her ginger sports drink calls for:

Lemons (the juice of 3 small lemons): Lemons are not only detoxifying to the liver but also provide a great hit of potassium – an essential electrolyte- and has lots of other benefits.

Sea Salt (1/2 tsp, or a bit more): Salt is essential for electrolyte balance. I tend to be a super salty sweater and crave salt after a difficult workout so I made sure to include enough salt in my drink.

Ginger Water (made from boiling a medium-sized ginger root, sliced, in 1 liter of water; simmer for 15 minutes and let cool): Ginger is delicious, helps ease stomach problems, and may even help with muscle soreness and recovery.

Add liquid stevia to taste and store in airtight container, pitcher, or jar in the fridge.
