It’s really easy to make your own energy drink, and you’ll undoubtedly find that it tastes better than the store-bought alternatives. In addition, the homemade version is all-natural (… no artificial flavors, colorings and preservatives) and a lot cheaper!

Here are the ingredients to mix together:

3 cups unsweetened cranberry juice (100 percent juice)
5 cups water
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons maple syrup

Optional: 1 star anise. If using this optional ingredient, leave to infuse for one hour then strain.

After mixing all ingredients: refrigerate.

This all-natural homemade energy drink provides a great tasting mix of carbohydrates to fuel your muscles. It also contains electrolytes (sodium and potassium) to help replace what your body loses through sweat.

You’ve undoubtedly heard that you need to replenish your electrolytes, especially after a workout. But what are electrolytes, why do we need them and what’s the best way to maintain them in our body?

What are Electrolytes?

There are tons of electrolytes out there, but in our bodies they are basically calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium chloride, hydrogen phosphate (a mineral) and hydrogen carbonate (a salt).

Why do we need Electrolytes?

Electrolytes are vital for survival. Not only could we not function if we didn’t have them, if we dilute them too much, it can lead to death by “water poisoning.” They regulate our nerve and muscle function, our hydration, the pH of our blood, rebuilding damaged tissue, and determining blood pressure. One example of their job would be in order for a muscle to contract-from your heart to the tiniest toe muscle- it needs the electrolytes calcium, sodium, and potassium.
Too little and muscles become weak, too much and they over contract.

Go to the next page to learn WHEN we need to replenish Electrolytes in our body …

This winning sports drink recipe was developed by an accomplished Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with an impressive athletic career, and also the winner of several marathons: Jackie Dikos.
She knows, from her own personal experience, what works best to get a healthy boost of energy when you need it.

This is a favorite homemade sports drinks that hydrates and provides as a quick source of carbohydrates to fuel working muscles. It also contains the sodium and potassium needed to maintain electrolyte balance, and it tastes good, too!

Jackie’s Cherry-Lemon Sports Drink

Ingredients:

2.5 ounces tart cherry juice

1 ounce lemon juice (this equals about 1/2 of a extra large lemon)

2.5 tablespoons of honey

~27 ounces of cold water

~1/6 -1/4 tsp. salt (1/6 would be just under 1/4 tsp. of salt)

This will make 32 ounces (4 normal servings).

To make this winning sports drink, just combine the tart cherry juice, lemon juice and honey in a 32 ounce bottle and fill to the top with water. Add salt. Shake until the honey is dissolved, then chill and serve.

Each serving contains approximately:

50 calories
0 grams of fat
0 grams protein
14 grams of carbohydrate
0 grams of fiber
112-145 mg sodium
39 mg potassium
