It’s really easy to make your own energy drink, and you’ll undoubtedly find that it tastes better than the store-bought alternatives. In addition, the homemade version is all-natural (… no artificial flavors, colorings and preservatives) and a lot cheaper!

Here are the ingredients to mix together:

3 cups unsweetened cranberry juice (100 percent juice)
5 cups water
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons maple syrup

Optional: 1 star anise. If using this optional ingredient, leave to infuse for one hour then strain.

After mixing all ingredients: refrigerate.

This all-natural homemade energy drink provides a great tasting mix of carbohydrates to fuel your muscles. It also contains electrolytes (sodium and potassium) to help replace what your body loses through sweat.

This is easy … just toss everything into a food blender and blend until the honey is dissolved. No blender? No worry … just squeeze and mix all the ingredients together by hand.

Then treat yourself to a tall glass of the results, add a few ice cubes, and enjoy.

If you’re lazy, however, and buy your Gatorade, PowerAde or electrolyte pumped-up sports drinks at the store to maintain your body’s balance of electrolytes during and after periods of heavy exercise, you may want to note the following:

When you look closer, you’re really just paying an outrageous price for glorified, brightly colored, sugar water. An overload of processed and refined sweetener (in the case of sports drinks, high-fructose corn syrup) is never a good thing. And while artificial flavors and colors don’t technically do much to your health, a part of me just shies away from the idea of ingesting things that are “fake.”

We’ve been led to believe by certain companies that we need an extra-special drink to recover from some sweat.

So what’s the bottom line about buying sports drinks and energy drinks?

Conclusion:

Make your own sports drink! It’s easy, quick, and naturally refreshing.

You will need…

-1/4 cup of freshly squeezed lime juice
-1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
-1½ to 2 cups fresh water, depending on how strong you want the flavor
-1/8 teaspoon of sea salt
-2 tablespoons natural sugar or honey, to taste

Enjoy!

This winning sports drink recipe was developed by an accomplished Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with an impressive athletic career, and also the winner of several marathons: Jackie Dikos.
She knows, from her own personal experience, what works best to get a healthy boost of energy when you need it.

This is a favorite homemade sports drinks that hydrates and provides as a quick source of carbohydrates to fuel working muscles. It also contains the sodium and potassium needed to maintain electrolyte balance, and it tastes good, too!

Jackie’s Cherry-Lemon Sports Drink

Ingredients:

2.5 ounces tart cherry juice

1 ounce lemon juice (this equals about 1/2 of a extra large lemon)

2.5 tablespoons of honey

~27 ounces of cold water

~1/6 -1/4 tsp. salt (1/6 would be just under 1/4 tsp. of salt)

This will make 32 ounces (4 normal servings).

To make this winning sports drink, just combine the tart cherry juice, lemon juice and honey in a 32 ounce bottle and fill to the top with water. Add salt. Shake until the honey is dissolved, then chill and serve.

Each serving contains approximately:

50 calories
0 grams of fat
0 grams protein
14 grams of carbohydrate
0 grams of fiber
112-145 mg sodium
39 mg potassium
